Mycorrhizal fungi are the key components of soil microbiota. They are obligate symbionts but are not host specific. Mycorrhizae are beneficial in low input agricultural systems of tropical acidic and infertile soils. There is tremendous value for mycorrhizal inoculants since they improve the efficiency and sustainability of the crop plants yield in areas of low soil fertility. The AM fungi secrete antibiotics, utilize surplus carbohydrates and other nutrients, and prevent the growth of pathogens, thus protecting the plants against their attack. The potential of using AM fungi on a large scale depends upon the technique by which axenic AM fungi are grown; the low cost production of large volume and high quality inoculants; formulations of AMF inoculants with an extended shelf life and easy handling; characterization of strains superior to indigenous AM fungi for plant growth.
The present book “Arbuscular Mycorrhizae in Crop Production” covers the basic and applied issues of AMF elucidating: the taxonomy, diversity of AMF, Micorrhizosphere: interaction between AMF with other beneficial microorganisms, AMF as phosphate mobilizer, Mycorrhizae and its application in plant disease management and role of mycorrhizae in sustainable agriculture. The book will be useful to Agriculture scientists, farmers, Botanists, researchers, teachers and students of science.
