Demography is the scientific study of population. Demographers seek to know the level and trends of population size and its components. They search for explanations of demographic changes and their implications for societies. The Indian demographic scene was undergoing a significant change. Although the country still continued to be in the explosive second stage of the demographic transition, yet the trends in fertility and mortality for the country as a

whole, as also for its large parts, indicated a perceptible change. The faster decline in the fertility rate in comparison to the decline in mortality rate of the country was a significant development in this regard since the mortality rate in the country had already declined significantly. The introduction chapter of the book includes effects of population growth on economic development, socio-economic background of India and study area, it includes methodology and

data base, objectives and chapter plan also. Chapter two Demographic Transition Theory includes theories those launched by various classical economists and demographers. On the other hand this chapter also includes some measures of main components of demographic transition. Chapter 3 gives overwiew of literature whereas chapter 4 discusses demographic parameters over the years, the parameters are Fertility and Mortality, Urbanization, Literacy and Sex Ratio etc. Demographic profile of the region is studied in chapter 5 wheres chapter 6 deals with fertility and

mortality model and empirical results. In this chapter district-wise analysis has been done. Population policy (1999) of the state, needs of population policy and various aspects has been dealt in chapter 7 whereas Demographic Dividends and its Implication are discussed in the last chapter, where we can see the dividends in India.The demographic dividend is not an involuntary marvel, but it requires an integrated and cohesive policy framework in health, education and in labour sectors to reap this dividend and capitalize the window of opportunity increase which is stressing our resources and hampering economic growth. In the last overall summary & final cunclusion of the book is given.
