The twenty - first century belongs to balanced water management. Water is the prime need of mankind and constitutes the very base of agriculture. All efforts should be made to conserve water.
Applied Hydrogeography examines the methods and techniques of a balanced use of water for irrigation. Out of the total estimated available water on the surface of the earth about 3 percent (39 km.3) is available as fresh water and a very small quantity of the global fresh water is available in rivers and lakes. Most of the surface water (96 percent) which annually flows in the rivers of the world, joins the oceans and goes waste. Iraq utilizes about 60 percent of its surface water. The need of the hour is to plan optimal utilization of water for domestic and industrial uses, livestock needs and for increasing agricultural production. Dr.Zahran Abdullah Nasir, the author, is well versed in the techniques of the evaluation of water resources from the viewpoint of hydrological parameters and provides guidelines for the planning and management of water resources.
